Review of “Eyes of Grace” by the Lamp Keeper
The introduction of this gripping novel invites you to Covenant Cove, a community of Christians whose goal it is to live according to the Torah. And you do get the sense of entering a new place in this memorable story of lives redeemed by the love of God.
The first half depicts the dismal experience of a human trafficking victim named Tamsin Fox. Seduced as a teen by Victor, the owner of a popular sex club, Tamsin’s job includes gathering unsuspecting young people to gaming parties where they are kidnapped and sold to rich perverts. It’s a brutal existence for her, until Tamsin meets an undercover Marine named Tony who is charged with busting up the ring. She helps him to catch Victor with enough evidence to land him in prison. Realistic details such as the codes used to keep the operations secret make this portion of the book come alive even though Tamisin nearly doesn’t.
In the second half, she and Tony, are placed in a witness protection program where they’re given new names and told to lay as low as possible. Before going on this last mission, Tony had planned to join the Covenant Cove Community, and that’s just what he and his wife do, actually taking Tamsin, now named Grace and expecting a child, with them. Here she learns the Bible as well as how to use plants to make medicine. The place is peaceful and she’s able to heal inside and out. Life would be great, if not for the fact that she can never marry again unless her brute of a husband gives her a letter of divorce.
I will leave it there except to say that the pace picks up again providing a surprising and satisfying ending. Eyes of Grace will prove valuable for anyone wanting to learn more about the very real tragedy of human trafficking even suggesting ways to combat it.
